These cookies date as far back as 15th century Swabia, Germany. Made of a soft dough pressed into carved wooden molds, many designs in use today date back hundreds of years. Like all picture cookies, they probably served much as greeting cards do today; given as gifts any time of the year but especially around festivals and important Church holidays. Their vast appeal is understandable when one considers how few people of the times could read, versus the universal language of pictures.

Latin inscription means for the faith and virtue of the swiss people.
